Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG gets a new V8 engine
Enthusiasts have been drooling over the 5.5-liter biturbo V8 making its way under the hood and across the lineup of some of the most menacing Mercedes-Benz vehicles on the road. Now comes a naturally aspirated variant that will be offered only in the SLK55 AMG, to be revealed in September at the Frankfurt motor show.
Power comes on to the tune of 422 hp at 6,800 rpm and 398 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. The mill weighs 412 pounds.
The engine is based on the turbo version, used in the AMG models of the E63, CLS63, CL63 and S63. Mercedes says many of the internals and basics--including the distance between cylinders, direct injection and automatic start/stop systems--are identical.
The mill measures 5,461 cc and is code-named M152 in Mercedes vernacular, indicating its close relationship with the M157 force-induction engine. There's also a cylinder-shutoff system that improves fuel economy.
Mercedes has been working on the engine for more than three years.
